YOUTH: Topaz seals victory for Under-16s
Crawley Wasps’ Under-16s got the new year off to a perfect start as they beat Newhaven 2-0 on Sunday.
Mark Hills’ side played some neat football which was rewarded on 35 minutes, albeit in fortunate circumstances.
Lily Beckett delivered a corner into the box with the ball finding its way into the net via a Newhaven defender.
Beckett and strike partner Topaz Luxford were giving the visitors some real problems and on 60 minutes, Wasps doubled the lead.
Jodie Barker slipped the ball into Luxford who powered past the Newhaven defence before shooting home.
The third goal their play merited eluded them but the victory means they move into third in the Sussex County League.
The Under-15s, who are playing boys teams this season after two years of total domination in their age group, put in another positive performance despite losing 14-0 to Withdean.
They were particularly impressive in the first 25 minutes, where their development was clear to see, but the star turn was goalkeeper Lauren Graves, who broke her nose in a match last month but returned to action with an excellent performance.
