Crawley Wasps’ Under-16s performed admirably despite the conditions but couldn’t find a breakthrough as they were beaten 1-0 by Oakwood.
With their local rivals’ pitch unplayable, the game was switched to Wasps’ Ewhurst ground, which was bearing up under the rain.
The only goal of a tight game came inside the first 10 minutes when Oakwood finished off a cross.
Wasps went close to an equaliser on a couple of occasions in the first half, as a Jodie Barker free-kick was almost turned in for an own goal and the Oakwood keeper made a good save to deny Lily Beckett.
After the break, Barker’s shot from distance whistled past the far post but as the game wore on, goalkeeper Feitong Wilde – who earned the player of the match award – made a couple of good saves to keep her side in the game.
The Under-15s, who are playing boys teams this season, put in another good display on a heavy pitch as they lost 3-0 to Lindfield.
Meanwhile, the Wasps Ladies reserves – who included a sprinkling of first-team players after their Sussex Challenge Cup semi-final was postponed – drew 1-1 with higher-league Eastbourne Town in a friendly, with Jodie Jacobs scoring.
